How to Tune Zhongruan, Liuqin, and Pipa
May 8, 2025🎶 How to Tune Your Guzheng – The Complete Beginner’s Guide
Feeling overwhelmed about tuning your Guzheng for the first time? Don’t worry—we’ve all been there. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to get your Guzheng sounding beautiful and harmonious, even if you’ve never tuned a string in your life.
🧰 What You’ll Need
- Tuning wrench – Usually comes with your Guzheng.
- Guzheng picks – Optional, but handy for plucking.
- Chromatic tuner – Calibrated to 442Hz.
- Basic scale knowledge – Just a little is enough (we’ll guide you!).
🎼 Understanding Guzheng Tuning
The Guzheng uses a pentatonic scale, meaning each octave consists of 5 notes: 1 (Do), 2 (Re), 3 (Mi), 5 (So), 6 (La).
If you’re tuning to the key of D major, the notes become:
- D (1)
- E (2)
- F# (3)
- A (5)
- B (6)
The string pattern repeats across the instrument, so most of the 21 strings follow this sequence in ascending octaves. The first string (thickest, topmost) typically starts at D, and the last string (bottommost) also ideally ends at D.
🎯 Pro Tip: In many Guzhengs, the green-colored strings are tuned to A—use them as visual markers!

🎻 Step-by-Step Tuning Process
1. Start from the Top
Begin with the thickest string (top), and work your way down.
2. Pluck & Check
Pluck each string to the right of the bridge, and use your chromatic tuner to check the pitch.
3. Adjust with Care
- Tighten (push wrench forward) to raise the pitch.
- Loosen (pull wrench toward you) to lower it.
🎯 Tip: If your Guzheng is very out of tune, tune slowly and gently. Sudden big changes can snap a string.
🎵 Stabilizing New Strings
If your Guzheng is brand new or you’ve just installed fresh strings, follow these steps:
- Gently press the string on both sides of the bridge to help it settle.
- Tune all strings at least 2–3 times in succession. This helps the strings stabilize and stay in tune longer.
- Consider tuning slightly sharper than the target pitch if you don’t plan to retune often.
