Andy Tay Wei Liang started learning the dizi at the age of thirteen from dizi maestro Professor Zhan Yong Ming. Under the careful tutelage of Professor Zhan, Andy was awarded both as a soloist as well as an ensemble musician.
As a soloist, Andy was awarded the Gold Medal Award in the 21st Century International Chinese Music Festial held in Genting Highlands in 2004. The following year he won the Silver award in the East Zone Schools Chinese Music Competition.
Andy also won the Gold award with his participation in the SYF Central Judging with Ngee Ann Secondary. His abilities as an ensemble musician were recognized as he was appointed sectional leader in the People's Association Youth Chinese Orchestra since 2007.
Andy has also received honours in the dizi performance grading examinations, most recently scoring a distinction in grade 9.
Andy has extended his knowledge by teaching the young budding musicians and also senior citizens passionate about music. His students in Holy Innocent Primary and Anglo Chinese School has made him proud by achieving Gold awards in the 2008 and 2011 SYF Central Judgings respectively.
Andy's patience in his teaching has allowed him to nurture many young talents. His numerous individual students have not let him down in their grading examinations, with all of them scoring merit and above.
Andy spends his free time learning the Ukulele and extending his knowledge of music theory. He also participates as a member of the Singapore Dizi Society. Besides devoting his time to music, Andy's favourite hobby is bowling.
