June 4, 2025π» Rosin for Your Erhu: The Unsung Hero of Your Sound
When it comes to the erhu, we often focus on the instrument itself, the strings, or even the bow. But have you ever considered the impact of rosin? Yes, that humble block of sticky substance can make a world of difference in your playing experience.
π§ͺ The Great Rosin Experiment
Curiosity led us to conduct a blind test with seven different rosins:
- Pirastro Oliv Rosin
- Pirastro Schwarz Rosin
- Pirastro Piranito Rosin
- Leto Rosins (four types, with bronze, silver, or gold flecks)
Each was tested on identical Hu Han Rou erhus with fresh bows. Blindfolded, I played each and rated them purely on tone and feel.
My personal ranking:
- Pirastro Oliv Rosin
- Pirastro Schwarz Rosin
- Pirastro Piranito Rosin
- All Leto Rosins (felt quite similar overall)
π» Different Strokes for Different Folks
One of our instructors actually preferred the Leto Rosin, calling the Pirastro options βtoo sticky.β It goes to showβrosin is personal!
