Desmond’s erhu journey began at the age of 13 in Manjusri Secondary School, under the guidance of Mr Zheng Kai Wen. At a young age, he has shown remarkable leadership qualities as he helmed the orchestra, first as the Vice-Chairman, then Chairman before graduating. To further hone his leadership abilities, he was selected by the Ministry of Education’s Co-Curricular Activities Board to participate in their Leadership Camp.
Desmond joined the Chengsan Chinese Orchestra in 2009 and participated with the orchestra in various performances such as Esplanade’s Beautiful Sunday and at the Istana where President Tony Tan was the Guest-Of-Honour. He was first appointed as Logistics Manager, and later Chairman in 2014. He became Zhonghu principal player in 2010 and is currently the erhu principal player of Chengsan Chinese orchestra.
Desmond joined Singapore Foochow Association Chinese Orchestra in 2014 after its reformation, and held the position of chairman and concertmaster.
Desmond enrolled into the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) in 2012, taking Diploma in Music, majoring in erhu under the tutelage of SCO (Singapore Chinese Orchestra) Zhonghu musician, Mr Neo Yong Soon Wilson. He clinched the 1st prize in the Youth Category in 2012, and later 1st in the Open Category in 2014, of the biennial National Chinese Music Competition (NCMC) that is organized by the National Arts Council (NAC). He was a member of the NAFA Chinese Ensemble.
Desmond is also a frequent guest player, guest playing in many orchestras such as NUS (National University of Singapore) Chinese Orchestra, Singapore Polytechnic Chinese Orchestra and Ding Yi Music Company.
In 2014, Desmond was invited by Mediacorp to guest star in Project Superstar, where he rehearsed and performed with a group of musicians and was interviewed by famous DJ Chen Ning.
In 2013, he performed in two overseas concert with the Ding Yi Music Company in China's cities of Guangzhou and Beijing. He also achieved great heights in the same year in Medan, Indonesia, where he and fellow peers from NAFA, organized, held and performed in their very own concert titled ‘An Evening in December’, which was very well-received. In 2014, he performed a double erhu concerto with the Chengsan Chinese Orchestra. He had the honour to perform with SCO, in participation of the National Chinese Orchestra Marathon Finale Concert in 2012, and NCMC 2014 Prize Winners’ Concert where he was one of the winner featured to perform with SCO. In 2015, he performed erhu concerto ‘Memories Under A Paper Umbrella’ with Singapore Foochow Association Chinese Orchestra, which was a local premiere.
