Q: What is the difference between an erhu, gaohu and zhonghu?
A: These three instruments are all commonly used within the Chinese orchestra.
The gaohu and zhonghu were derived from the erhu and modified to expand the range of bowed string instruments in the orchestra; the gaohu is pitched higher than the erhu, while the zhonghu is pitched lower than the erhu.
