Q: I am currently learning the dizi on my own. Would it be possible for me to teach myself up to an amateur performance level? I am currently working towards my ABRSM Grade 8 flute exam and am self-taught in various other wind instruments, such as the tin-whistle, ocarina and recorder.
A: The embouchure is required of the dizi is slightly different from that of the western flute, but can be easily learnt given your flute training. However, you may require guidance in order to achieve that unique Chinese flavour in your playing.
