Q: What is the main difference between the flute and dizi? Out of the many dizis available - xiaodi, bangdi, qudi and xindi - which is the most similar to the flute?

A: In terms of size, the qudi bears most semblance to the western concert flute.

That being said, however, the dizi and flute are rather different - while the flute prides itself on steady intonation and is capable of playing chromatic notes with relative ease, the dizi has a unique timbre and pitching that creates a distinctly Chinese flavour (which the western flute cannot replicate).
